Parents raise concerns about possible Kyrene School District school closures

Dozens of parents made their voices heard on Tuesday night about their fear and anger regarding possible school closures in a school district that covers parts of Ahwatukee and the East Valley.

Families packed the hearing in front of the Kyrene School District Governing Board. Parents came up one by one, sometimes bringing a child with them, to talk about what the schools mean to them.

“This is really hard and personal,” said one mom while tearing up. “I really implore you all to consider other options that really think towards the future.”

The district set up the Long-Range Planning Committee to address the drop in enrollment, which officials blame on declining birth rates, an aging population, and limited affordable housing.
